Concern in Misiones

7 out of 10 school-enrolled children and adolescents aged 11 to 15 work for the market

A survey by DYA in rural secondary schools in Misiones reveals alarming data. Among 16 and 17 year-olds, the figure rises to 8 out of 10. Male adolescents aged 16 and 17 present the highest rates at 90%.

Child labor in rural economy

The survey was conducted in Aristóbulo del Valle, where the economy revolves around yerba mate, tea, and tobacco production. Males participate in agricultural and construction activities; women in paid care tasks and product sales.

42% of adolescents aged 16-17 perform self-consumption activities. 20% reported dedicating 10+ hours weekly to intensive domestic tasks.

Consequences and challenges

School dropout in Misiones reached 34.2% in 2022, compared to the national average of 15.1%.

"The magnitude of child labor in Misiones is an urgent wake-up call," noted Helga Fourcade, DYA director.

The organization insists on comprehensive strategies combining inclusive education, family support, and monitoring of working conditions.
