Concern in Tucumán: Adolescent Labor

Concern in Tucumán

A recent survey in rural schools of Tucumán by DYA reveals concerning data: 68% of students aged 11 to 15 perform labor activities for the market, and that figure rises to 80% in the 16 and 17 age group.

The study was conducted voluntarily by more than 500 students in five schools in the department of Monteros.

"These results make evident school trajectories crossed by the double burden of study and work, in a context of growing fragility in rural households," explained Helga Fourcade, Director of DYA Argentina.

Males in rural tasks, women in care roles

The survey showed strong gender inequalities: males tend to perform agricultural and construction work, while females show higher rates of intensive domestic work and food sales.

63% of male students aged 11 to 15 also perform family self-consumption tasks.

A call to strengthen prevention policies

DYA emphasizes this survey is a key tool for public policy design. The eradication of child labor is a collective responsibility involving the State, social organizations, the productive sector, and the community.
