DYA at the UN Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights

DYA at UN Forum

Maró Guerrero, Regional Coordinator of DYA, participated as a panelist at the IX Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights in Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights and Brazil's Ministry of Labor.

Guerrero presented DYA's experience in implementing due diligence systems in agricultural productive chains, aimed at preventing child labor and promoting decent work in Peru and Argentina.

She presented the Social Compliance System (SCS) developed in Argentina with key actors including the Chamber of Millers of Yerba Mate, the Argentine Blueberry Committee, RENATRE, and the IRAM Institute, which has certified more than 30 productive establishments.

She also shared DYA's initiative with Peru's Ministry of Labor promoting a Child Labor-Free Seal for cooperatives of small producers.

"Due diligence systems are a concrete tool for private sector commitment to human rights," highlighted Guerrero.

Key points highlighted:

  • Working with business owners and workers from the start, identifying risks and developing adapted tools.
  • The need for due diligence systems to evolve from private models to state systems with public control.
  • Adapting tools to the capacities of SMEs and cooperatives.
  • Creating structural conditions to prevent violations, not just monitoring compliance.
